Before winter
Have your battery tested in the fall, when your winter tires go on: a weak battery often fails on the first deep freeze.
Making your battery last
A 12-volt car battery lasts about five years on average, according to CAA-Québec. Extreme cold slows the chemical reaction it needs to start the engine. To go easy on it:
- don’t run the headlights, radio or heater with the engine off;
- avoid driving only short trips;
- have the terminals cleaned to prevent corrosion;
- park out of the wind in winter, ideally in a garage;
- use the battery type in your owner’s manual: vehicles with automatic start-stop need an AGM or EFB battery.
